In this edition, we are in conversation with Yangdivila Sangtam (Ati), Duty Manager at Tattva Wellness Spa, who began her journey as a healer and worked her way up through sheer determination and a genuine love for wellness.
Q 1. You started your career in wellness unexpectedly. Where are you originally from, and how has your background influenced your approach to wellness?
Yangdivila Sangtam: “I’m from Nagaland, which is in the northeastern part of India. I’m the eldest of three siblings. My mother is a housewife, and my father works in the Nagaland police. I have a younger sister and brother. We’re a close-knit family, and I take pride in my roots.”
“When I was in my hometown, I got an offer to be a healer with another company. At that time, I was unemployed and looking for work, so I went to Delhi for the interview and got selected. That’s how I entered the wellness industry. It wasn’t planned, but I’m glad I took the chance. Initially, I didn’t fully understand the impact wellness could have on people’s lives. But as I started working at Tattva, I saw how wellness therapies help individuals feel better physically and mentally. The industry felt more like a calling than just a job, and that realization made me dive deeper into it.”
Q 2. What inspired you to pursue a career in wellness and spa management?
Yangdivila Sangtam: “I began my career as a therapist at Tattva Wellness spa in 2019. However, I soon recognized an opportunity to expand my skill set. My ex-manager, who had great trust in my abilities, took the time to train me in guest management, appointment scheduling, and other key aspects of spa operations. Through hands-on experience and continuous learning, I developed a strong passion for the management side of things. It became clear to me that this was where I could truly make an impact.”
Q 3. As a Duty Manager, what does your typical day at Tattva Wellness Spa look like?
Yangdivila Sangtam: “My day begins by checking bookings and preparing for the day ahead. I go through the inventory to ensure everything is in order, then hold meetings with the therapists to go over any updates or changes. Training and re-training are a key part of these sessions, as I believe in keeping the team aligned with the latest guidelines and techniques. After that, I handle guest bookings and appointments. When appointments are low, I proactively reach out to hotel guests, letting them know about the special offers and discounts available to boost engagement and drive sales.”
Q 4. Can you share a memorable guest interaction or experience that made you feel proud of the work you do?
Yangdivila Sangtam: “For me, hospitality is all about creating positive guest experiences. One such experience is the most memorable moments for me was when a regular spa guest complimented me after his massage. He told me that my greeting and smile always give him positive vibes. It made me proud because it’s not just about the service, but also about how we make people feel. That’s what makes this job special.”
Q 5. How do you handle challenging situations or guest complaints while maintaining Tattva’s high standards?
Yangdivila Sangtam: “Guest complaints can be challenging and I believe in handling them with care. When a guest has a complaint, I always listen first. It’s important to understand the guest’s feelings without interrupting them. Once I fully understand the situation, I calmly acknowledge their concerns and work towards a solution. Staying calm is key to maintaining the high standards we set at Tattva Wellness.”
Q 6. If you could give one piece of wellness advice to everyone, what would it be?
Yangdivila Sangtam: “Focus on guest satisfaction. If you’re passionate about wellness, go for it, but know that it takes patience and hard work. If you can handle the challenges and stay committed, the rewards will come.”
